An exhibition of paintings by Sarah Richards
This body of work shows the complex layering of my experience with the creative process. I started this journey of the Masters because I was experiencing ‘artist’s block’. Levels of fear, and apprehension essentially blocked my creative process. These paintings show this struggle; between that which flows and that which hinders.

The exhibition was shown at Artspace Durban in South Africa from the 18th February to 8 March 2008 .These paintings form the practical component of a Masters qualification at the Durban University of Technology. Below are a selection of paintings from the exhibition.

This group of paintings explore the 4 cardinal points which represent the four main turning points in the creative process- first there is the desire to create an artwork, then one needs to ask for help, guidance and perhaps even encouragement to help get the process started. Then one needs to believe that this can be done, trusting ones own abilities and the flow of creation . Lastly receiving the gifts of creation, and the creating of the art work, receiving criticism and compliments. The process then begins again.
